Character History []
Abe reconnects with Asher while visiting Midge in Miami and learns about the injustice Asher suffered, which had destroyed his once-promising career. Moved by his friend’s story, Abe writes an article reflecting on that difficult chapter of Asher’s life. In the following episode, he approaches Asher to ask for his permission to publish it. Asher declines, saying the article hits too close to home — though he admits it’s so good, it might still get published. Nevertheless, Abe decides to go ahead and try publishing it anyway.
In the episode “Everything is Bellmore”, Abe writes a scathing review of a play titled “They Came, They Danced”. Asher, upset, calls Abe to reproach him for including in the article a detail from their past: that they had once started a fire in a federal building. This revelation draws the attention of the FBI, which sends an agent to speak with them in an effort to finally close the case as a minor youthful prank.
During this tense time, Abe becomes jealous after learning that Asher and his wife Rose had a romantic history. Fueled by this jealousy, he accuses Asher of being the one who actually entered the building and committed arson, while Abe merely acted as a lookout. He also makes another accusation, claiming Asher had vandalized a stock exchange in 1923.
Although the FBI investigation doesn’t go any further, the emotional fallout is significant. Abe ends up confronting Asher and his wife directly. Ironically, this confrontation inspires Asher with a new idea for a play—what he considers the best idea he’s had in 20 years. Before leaving, Asher gives Abe a piece of writing advice, asks him never to contact him again, kisses Rose’s hand, and walks out the door.
