Historical Notes[]

Three of the Season 2 episodes including We're Going to the Catskills!, Midnight at the Concord, Let's Face the Music and Dance are set at the fictional Steiner Mountain Resort in the Catskill Mountains of New York. The resorts of the Catskills were the favored summer retreats of Jewish families who could afford to leave hot, humid New York City in the summer during the days before air conditioning.

In the 1950s, many of the hotels along the Atlantic shore and other vacation spots were "restricted," accepting only white, gentile guests. This lead to the growth of resorts catering to Jewish families in the Catskills. Steiner's may have been inspired by Grossinger's Catskill Resort Hotel, one of the largest of the Catskills resorts, which Midge mentions in this episode.

These hotels and resorts frequently featured nightly entertainment and became fertile ground for budding Jewish entertainers, especially stand-up comedians, who performed in what became known as the "Borscht Belt," the hotels and clubs dotting the Catskills. Comics including Henny Youngman, Rodney Dangerfield, Joan Rivers, and Billy Crystal developed their comic skills as they entertained the Jewish clientele summering in the Catskills.
